Sock Wars!

So it's crunch time at BCIT -- although when isn't it?! We've seen students are wearing their pajamas to school, carrying pillows around with them... it's a rough scene. What these students really need is a little pick-me-up. Something that evokes energy and inspiration! What better to get people pumped up than a game of......                         SOCK WARS!
Don't worry, I didn't know what it was either before I read this. Sock Wars is designed to bring students closer by pinning them against each other. Makes sense, right?

Well to better explain what Sock Wars really is, check out this awesome video compiled by BCIT students in collaboration of the BCITMA: Spy vs Spy Teaser Video (link leads to YouTube).

Wise Words from Liz King

Liz King
Liz King, a sought after event planner from New York took the time to hang out in a Starbucks and Skype with some students from BCIT. Tina Nguyen and Albert Yee led MPI BCIT's February General Meeting and invited Liz to share her experience. Exceeding our expectations, Liz offered golden advice on both how to connect with people in business and the steps to creating a personal brand!

As students we always want to know… where do we start? How do we break into the industry? How do we meet people in the industry? The answer? Twitter. Liz King had some great (and simple) advice that anyone can follow – literally!

King talked about how following interesting people and following the people they are following is a great way to learn about what going on in the industry. Use hashtags specific to an industry to discover trends or hot topics. After sitting back and watching, Liz started to share content she was interested in and then started engaging and commenting on other peoples content. Eventually, Liz began to create her own content. She said, “it’s a great way to meet people!”

Wait, who are you?

Another specialty of Liz’s – as if she didn’t already do enough! – is discussing personal branding. Now, as a student at BCIT we’ve all heard the spiel from Tracey, but a personal brand really is important!! Liz’s tips are:
  •  Figure out what is unique about YOU. Something simple but distinguishing.
  • Communicate who you are quickly. Someone should know something about you after only 10-15 seconds on your page. Capture them.
  • Be prepared to brag a bit! Now is not a time to be modest.

Use these tips in your LinkedIn profile, Twitter bio and other social media tools (Facebook is generally for personal use – check your privacy settings!) and you will be on the road to making a professional online first impression.

Technology, you move to fast!

Now the question came up from an audience member: how do you learn about all this new technology flying out into cyberspace? Her answer: techy blogs! Sites such as mashable.com and techcrunch.com offer information on the latest trends in technology. The latest thing according to Liz? RFID.

My new favourite tool? Word clouds.

From Student to Industry

A common theme of things to make sure you have when entering the workforce is experience. Thankfully, Liz considers education experience! Students are always wondering how to nail down that dream job even though they have no industry experience. Liz’s advice is always be learning. Although having an education and learning as much as you can is important, it’s not always what you know, but who you know.

Making connections is vital in business and easier to make than you may think! Networking and volunteering are two great ways to meet great people. Meeting them is half the battle, it’s very important that once you’ve met them you:
  • Follow up!
  • Add them on LinkedIn with a PERSONALIZED message.
  • Ask them to meet for coffee.

Now is the perfect time to play the student card and learn as much as you can from industry members willing to share.

The MPI BCIT team would like to thank Liz King for chatting with us and we hope to hear from her again!

Tourism Professionals Party in Gastown

MPI BCIT has had various fundraisers to contribute to the BCIT Student Endowment fund, which will help a student in need obtain an education. During the end of January, MPI BCIT hosted a fundraiser at the Lamplighter Public House in Gastown, Vancouver. The event consisted of time to mingle with other attendees, play pool and enjoy the bar’s atmosphere and amenities. The committee’s goal was to have 20 attendees and exceeded that goal with a final attendee count of 30 people. The fundraiser allowed MPI BCIT to further contribute to the BCIT Student Endowment fund. The event was a lot of fun and attendees, both MPI members and not, said they’re looking forward to the next MPI BCIT event.

Burnaby School District Case Competition

The Burnaby School District (BSD) Case Competition program was developed by the BCIT School of Business in partnership with the Burnaby School District. The BSD Case Competition program was targeted towards students in grades nine to twelve and was customized for the Summit Program. It consisted of three cases: Prostock Baseball, Burnaby Heights Hats Off Day, and Canadian Tire Driving School. The program was divided into two phases: mentorship and the case competition.

The first phase consisted of members from the BCIT chapters of MPI, MA, and SIFE that went to five different Burnaby High schools: Burnaby North, South, Central, Moscrop, and Cariboo Hill, for a month to provide guidance and answer questions students may have about developing a marketing plan that focuses on an element of the marketing mix: product, place, price, and promotion. The first case, Prostock Baseball, was a non-presentation practice case. For most students it was their first time developing a marketing case, so the focus was on the basics of the case. The second case, Hats Off Day, was a presentation case and was also the connection to phase two of the program, the case competition.
The case competition took place on Nov 17th at the BCIT Burnaby Campus. It was a full day of hard work that tested the High School students’ ability to work as a cohesive team under tight time pressures. The students were given 45 minutes of practice before they had to deliver their ten minute PowerPoint presentations. The second half of the day consisted of a ten minute presentation from Annika from BC Hydro about sustainability. The students were then given two hours to develop a ten minute presentation that solves the problem stated in the case. The winner of the 2012 Case Study Competition was Burnaby North. Awards were also given out for the best market research, most innovative idea, and most convincing sales pitch.

My experience as the BSD Case Competition Event Coordinator was amazing! My main task was the development and organization of the case competition day for 73 high school students and teachers, ten BCIT mentors, and four judges. Although I developed the schedule and knew it inside and out, I did not know what to expect. It was my first time developing an event of that size with that many stakeholders.  I would definitely have to say with the help of the motivated mentors and BCIT staff it was a great success! I am deeply grateful for all the effort the mentors and BCIT staff have put into the mentoring sessions and the competition day. There was a touch of competition between the mentors wanting their respective school to win.  I think that determination was one of the driving factors that pushed the mentors to carry on through the high pressure ten hour day. This event definitely would not have been as successful without the mentors, BCIT Staff, and the high school students and teachers. This was definitely a rewarding experience!

BSD Case Competition Event Coordinator

Being a director for the case study competition was by far the highlight of my time at BCIT. In June, during the beginning of the planning process I had no idea what to expect for the competition day and the mentor sessions, as something like this had never been done before at BCIT. The next five months were filled with meetings with an excellent team, and lots of emails and sessions with mentors and the high schools. Once the mentor sessions began in mid-October, the mentors, organizing team and I knew this event was going to be a success. I think it’s safe to say, we were all blown away by the amount of interest and hard work put into all the case work by the students. Their talent was truly displayed when each school made their first presentation and hurried back to their classrooms to prepare in just two hours, another case study preparation. The whole event was in large part a collaborated effort by BCIT, the BCITMA, SIFE BCIT, MPI BCIT, and the Burnaby School District to get everything organized. But what really tied it all together were the students and their drive to learn and succeed that resulted in their incredible performances. I had an extremely memorable time being a part of this event, because not only was I able to develop my writing, organizing, and communicating skills, I got to be a part of a special event that enriched and furthered education in the community.

MPI BCIT Spreads Holiday Cheer!

MPI BCIT celebrated Christmas in style with reindeer antlers, santa hats and giant candy canes! On December 7th, students from MPI BCIT brought the Christmas spirit to the Great Hall at BCIT taking fun and festive photos with students on campus at our Christmas Photo Booth. We offered students an opportunity to get into the Christmas spirit for only one dollar! Adrienne Regier (MPI BCIT’s Director of Events) and her team of dedicated individuals set up a backdrop, a registration table and Christmas props for all to enjoy. Many volunteers came out to help by encourage students to participate, dressing up in festive attire and even posing in pictures with their festive gear. Not only was this fundraiser a ton of fun, but it will allow MPI BCIT to continue to throw bigger and better events in the future to help out both BCIT students and the community!

Finally, I would like to give a huge thanks to Adrienne Regier and her team for all her hard work this year and we are very excited for what is to come in the New Year!

From everyone at MPI BCIT, we wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and have a wonderful New Year!
